HII’s standards-compliant, automated interfaces integrate data from
and to many different sources -- hospitals, labs, medical equipment, patient’s
home, payors, etc. – into a unified patient record, a powerful solution
to fragmented patient information. Now there’s only one record for each
patient that has all the clinical and financial information, versus several
records that sometimes duplicate each other.
What's an Interface?
An interface is a way of sharing information. The information shared can be
between a computer and a machine, a laboratory, a hospital information system,
or an insurance company, etc. There's a one way interface, one in which the
first entity shares information with a second entity, but the second entity
doesn't share information with the first one. There's a two way interface,
one in which both entities share information with each other.
Health Level 7 (HL7) and Other Standards
HII is a member of HL7 (Health Level 7), a standards group. In healthcare,
HL7 is the industry standard. HII uses HL7 specifications for all interfaces
as often as possible. But not all interfaces can be HL7. For an interface to
be HL7, all entities involved with the interface must agree to use HL7. This
is not always the case because some entities don't have an HL7 interface.
HII is also a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM),
another organization that provides communication protocols.. As with HL7, we
use the ASTM technology to ensure that external data entering the TIME™ System
is validated by the protocol. HL7 and ASTM have cross copyright protocol agreements
to use each other’s protocols within their own protocol, an indication
that standards organizations themselves are working for greater standardization
within their industry.
HII Interfaces
If a client wishes to share their information with another company or entity,
we help them create the interface. If a client wants to receive information
from another company or entity, we help them create the interface. There
will be other interfaces we will create in the future when our clients ask
for them. The following is a list of interfaces our clients use now:
Lab Results
- full text or result only
Lab Order (from and to external lab system)
Dialysis Machine - all of the major manufacturers
ADT interfaces - one and two way
Charge
Electronic claims - Medicare, Medicaid, commercial
Electronic remittances
